Break the beam, whether it's a child, a pet, a stored bicycle, or a stray beach ball, and the opener either refuses to close or reverses direction immediately if it was already moving.

The exact color scheme varies by opener brand, but the general pattern holds across most systems: a steady, solid light on both sensors usually means the beam is connected and aligned correctly. Signs Your Safety Sensors Are Failing or Misaligned

  • The door won't close at all from the wall button or remote. It starts to move, or doesn't move, and just stops. What Actually Causes Sensor Problems

Safety sensors are simple, durable devices, but they sit low to the ground in a space that collects dust, moisture, and the occasional bump from a car bumper, snow shovel, or kid's bike. Loose or corroded wiring connections. The low-voltage wires running from each sensor back to the opener head are typically stapled along the wall or ceiling, and they can loosen at the terminal screws over time, get nicked during other garage work, or corrode slightly at the connection point in a humid, unheated garage. Illinois garages see real humidity swings across the seasons, and that moisture cycling can quietly degrade a wiring connection long before it fails outright.

Homeowner-Safe Troubleshooting Steps

Most sensor problems are genuinely fixable without any tools beyond a soft cloth and a level, and without opening the opener unit itself. Work through these in order.

  • Check both LED indicator lights first. Look at each sensor housing (not the wall control or the opener head) and note whether the light is solid, off, or blinking. This tells you whether you're dealing with one sensor or both, which narrows the problem considerably.
  • Clean both lenses. Wipe the lens face of each sensor with a soft, dry cloth or a lightly dampened microfiber cloth. Avoid glass cleaner with ammonia on tinted or coated lenses; a dry wipe handles dust and light grime just fine.

  • Check visible alignment. Both sensor brackets should point directly at each other and sit at the same height on each side of the track. If one looks visibly tilted, angled downward, or lower than the other, that's very likely your problem. Gently, by hand, try to straighten the bracket back toward level and re-aim it at its partner across the opening.
  • Look for obvious wiring damage. Follow the low-voltage wire back from each sensor a short distance and look for anything visibly frayed, pinched, or disconnected at a staple point. Don't pull, splice, or rewire anything, just look.
  • Test the fix. Once lenses are clean and sensors look aligned, try closing the door normally from the wall button or remote. If it closes cleanly and the LED lights are solid, you've likely resolved it. If the door still won't close, or the lights are still off or blinking after cleaning and a basic realignment, the issue is probably wiring, a failed sensor unit, or an opener circuit board problem, and that's the point to stop and call in a technician.

Never Bypass or Disable Safety Sensors
